The Center for Childhood Safety (CCS) will support local schools for National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. An additional event, Greater Green Bay Area Frogger, is planned for the same day to enforce and educate locals about crosswalk laws and yielding to pedestrians.
Bike to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.
Schools can participate in Bike to School Day in a variety of ways, from meeting at a nearby location and biking together to school, to meeting at their school and biking a lap together around the school.
Although the day of national recognition focuses on healthy habits, local municipalities, CCS, and Live54218 are adding their own safety flair to the day by planning additional safety events called "Frogger," in the communities of De Pere, Green Bay in partnership with the Aging Disability Resource Center (ADRC), Howard, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The event is also supported by NWTC who will provide educational materials to their students.
Frogger is a crosswalk education event in which local public safety departments will be educating the community on how to safely share the streets. Local law enforcement will be focused on enforcing pedestrian and crosswalk laws during the event, such as yielding the right of way to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
